Think Like a Tree
by Karen I. Shragg
Soak up the sun
Affirm life's magic
Be graceful in the wind
Stand tall after a storm
Feel refreshed after it rains
Grow strong without notice
Be prepared for each season
Provide shelter to strangers
Hang tough through a cold spell
Emerge renewed at the first signs of spring
Stay deeply rooted while reaching for the sky
Be still long enough to
hear your own leaves rustling.

Arbor Day Celebration at the Roosevelt Island School (P.S./I.S. 217)
P.S./I.S. 217 and entire Roosevelt Island community celebrated Arbor Day on Friday, May 6th. Those who attended enjoyed a gorgeous spring morning and the program celebrating trees and particularly those which have been planted around our beautiful island. Dr. Grimm, a friendly and familiar face to many island families, was Master of Ceremonies, and brief remarks were given by RIOC President Leslie Torres, and Michael Smith, Parks & Recreation Manager for the island. There were also many faces from PS/IS 217 involved! Many thanks to Ms. Christian (Middle School ELA teacher); coordinator of the Arbor Day Celebration, Mr. Solow (music & band teacher) and the Middle School band for their musical performances, Ms. Feldman's Class 201 and Ms. Sheridan's Class 202 for reciting the poem 'Think Like a Tree' by Karen Shragg, and our Principal, Ms. Beckman giving the closing remarks.
