Hello Parents/Families of 217!
Your child should have delivered a paper that explains about the Walk-a-thon/Fundraiser that is taking place at the school tomorrow, Friday (the 29th) to raise money for the victims of the Tsunami & Earthquake that hit Japan. This is an important event that was quickly put into place to lead into the Cherry Blossom Festival that is also focused on fundraising for Japan and will be held on the island this Saturday!
The classes will be taking turns walking the Roosevelt Island Loop tomorrow during the school day. Each child was encouraged to have 4 sponsors that would donated at least $5.00 for the cause. All donations are due tomorrow - please submit them to your child's teacher or at the Main Office. All proceeds will be donated and presented at Saturday's Cherry Blossom Festival. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for tomorrow, and if you are able grab your sneakers and join your child's class for a fabulous cause!
Below is the email that we sent out to those on the PTA's contact list describing all of the events for the Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday {if you are not receiving these emails, please be sure to check your spam folder, or please email our Web Coordinator - Natalia Starkova at natalia.n.starkova@gmail.com to be added. Emails come out weekly highlighting important events at the school and with the PTA!}. The festival chair and committee are in need of more volunteers that can help the day of the event, from 1-3pm in the afternoon. Please email your name asap to either Summer Lord - summerday.lord@gmail.com or Kristi Towey - kristi.pta217@gmail.com if you can offer help for any amount of time during the event.
Also, children are encouraged to participate in a photo contest with 3 different prizes - one of which is a Fuji digital camera! For children of the island wishing to enter, they can pre-register and the entrance fee will be waived....however, we must receive their name, age and class by tomorrow at the end of the school day! Please either email me the information for each child wishing to participate or submit it via writing to Ms. Lauraine in the Main Office.

One of the things that I'm working with Mrs. Zucknovich with this year, is a trial run on a Classroom Discretionary Budget. This was my idea as I noticed that costs were adding up and when asked I found out Mrs. Z is paying a lot out of pocket for extra things our children are benefiting from in class. Examples are: Envelopes and Stamps for the Pajama Drive, supplies, and favors and set-up for class events. We decided to test run the idea of a Class Budget, and if it works here perhaps it will be the "thing" to do with all classes next year at the school! If you could please send in $5 this month, and then each month another $5 to be sent in the first week of the month - this will help cover all these extra expenses. If there is a time when there is a surplus in the class budget, than I will make sure that we let you know not to send in any more donations :) Until then - if you can please send in $5 cash at your earliest convenience in an envelope marked 'October Money' and have your child turn it into Mrs. Zucknovich. Thank you very much for your help on this matter!
There is also the Pajama Drive that the class is working on, which an update went home today with news that the class has been able to bring in 25 pairs of pajamas! I will cover this again in next week's Class Update and include it in with the Hawks Happenings to be sent out with the entire school email list...however, the new point that we all might want to consider is if we know any Corporations or Businesses that will match our donation!
Last tid-bit before going into all the events coming up - Mrs. Zucknovich and I will be planning out events for Parents to come in and volunteer time and be part of the Classroom Experience. Updates will come shortly!

According to Class 103 teacher Mrs.Z., as of Tuesday, October 5, students have already donated 9 pajamas towards our class goal of 40 and brought in their first addresses to write to! Children wrote multiple persuasive letters for the project this week, and are preparing an oral presentation for one of the upcoming PTA meetings. A representative from Scholastic is due to come in - more details to follow.

P.S./I.S. 217 is conducting a Medical Supplies Emergency Relief Drive in conjunction with RIOC (Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation). Starting Monday, February 1st, you can bring following supplies to Ms. Lauraine in the main office:
Last year, New York City public school children collected more than 225,000 pounds of food! This fall and winter promise to be especially challenging for struggling households in New York City. From Monday, December 7th through Friday, December 11th - "Kids Can Help Week" at P.S./I.S.217. Please bring non-perishable canned goods to Ms. Lauraine in the main office. Cans will be donated to City Harvest.
