Scholastic Pajama Drive at P.S./I.S. 217 (Roosevelt Island School)

A note from Mrs. Z:

"Dear Parents,
We are doing a community service project to help shelter and orphanage children get books and pajamas.  By the look of Scholastic's due date I would think they would receive these around holiday time.  What a wonderful project!
Community service has benefits for your child as well, including creating a connection to the community, building self-esteem, developing leadership skills and demonstrating that children can make a difference.
Any help you can provide would be great.  Our goal is to start small - perhaps 40 pairs of PJ's for the class.  A set of pajamas can be purchased inexpensively from Wal-Mart or Target for about $10.  If you cannot participate, there is lots of work your child can do in support of the project, including writing letters and making posters for the project.  I am asking each parent if they could give at least one name/address of someone we can solicit assistance.  HR departments are a great place to start as well as friends!
Thanks!  Our due date is 12/1 (a bit earlier than Scholastic) due to the busy holiday schedule.  Let's make holiday time more special for these children.  In giving we get so much.  Thanks in advance!
Mrs. Z and Class 103"

About the Drive

Last year, we were able to donate 18,000 pajamas and books to kids who needed them most. This year, we want to reach a goal of 25,000 pajamas and books. Will you and your students help make this dream come true?

Here's what we need:

Brand-new pajamas in all sizes from newborn to adult.
Complete sets or nightgowns only, PLEASE.

Curriculum Night for Class 103

Curriculum Night for Class 103 is on Thursday, September 16, 2010, time to be determined.  We will discuss the curriculum and any questions parents might have.  If possible, please make alternate arrangements for small children on this night.

A note from Class 103 teacher Mrs.Z: "I will do my best to get back to you ASAP.  Mornings are busy so it is not always possible to check email before school, but I usually check it during the day. The school number is 212-980-0294 x 2140.  The best time to call is after school or during lunch (lunch hour is usually 11:00-12:15 - but at times I am in meetings).  Notes are fine too.  If it is something lengthy, feel free to schedule a conference.  Please fill out the enclosed class forms in order to get to know your children, their needs, and learning preferences.  These help me to be responsive and sensitive to your child.  I am so excited to meet you and hope to see you all at Curriculum Night.  Together we can make this a great year for your child!"

REMINDER:  NO SCHOOL ON THURSDAY, September 9, 2010 AND ON FRIDAY, September 10, 2010.  SCHOOL WILL RESUME ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2010.

Welcome to the new school year!

The Roosevelt Island School (P.S./I.S. 217) is excited to begin a new year together!  School Principal Ms. Beckman, Literacy/ESL Coach Ms. Fokine, and Assistant Principal Ms. Bartolino greeted returning and new students and parents on September 8th.

So many things happened during the summer, P.S./I.S. 217 boasts a brand new playground:

a new flower and vegetable garden behind the school building:
and a beautiful mosaic in the hallway:

We welcome all new and returning families and looking forward to working together to make it another fantastic year at P.S. 217!  The success of our school depends on your cooperation and active support!  The PTA has many opportunities for all the families whose children attend the school to get involved.  We hope you will consider not only supporting the school financially, but giving us whatever time and energy you can - your skills and talents are much appreciated!
